Car drivers cause most motorcycle accident fatalities
Across America, motorcycle drivers and riders are dying or are being seriously injured on a daily basis, and for most it’s not because they weren’t wearing helmets, because they were. Nor is it because they failed to obey traffic signals and rules of the road.
Instead, it’s because today’s zoned-out, multi-tasking, in-a-hurry drivers of cars, autos, trucks and other larger vehicles aren’t paying enough attention. They’re too busy making cell phone calls or texts or are in too big of a rush, and they fail to note smaller motorcycles even though such cycles and their drivers are clearly visible.
That appears to be what happened in a tragic motorcycle accident death this June in San Antonio, when a 22-year-old man was driving his motorcycle on a Farm to Market road and was hit by a car pulling out from a side street to turn.
The motorcyclist, by the way, was wearing a protective helmet. That wasn’t enough to spare his life.
The car driver told police he didn’t see the motorcycle until it collided with his auto. But that’s no excuse, and charges could be pending in the motorcycle accident fatality.
Thus, another death is added to the annual tally of around 40,000 Americans killed on our roads and highways. Of those, about 10 per cent are motorcycle drivers and riders, despite the fact that motorcycles account for only 2 per cent of all vehicles on our streets and freeways.
This disparity quite often is due to the fact that drivers of larger vehicles fail to yield to oncoming motorcycles, as apparently occurred in San Antonio. When a car pulls out in front of a motorcycle at just the wrong instant, it can be too late for anyone to do anything about it.
Indeed, it’s estimated that in two-thirds of all motorcycle accident fatalities, the reason was a car driver failing to yield right of way to an oncoming motorcycle. Largely as a result, as many as 4,810 motorcyclists have been killed and 76,000 motorcyclists have been injured in a recent one-year period (2006, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
